2019

Line converge Thailand 2019 is an innovation conference that was held last July by Line Thailand to reveal its vision, business direction and latest innovations. Taking into consideration the theme of the conference of blurring the lines between Online and Offline, “Boundless” was conceived as the key concept of the pavilion.

The pavilion was located at an outdoor plaza in Chidlom, a busy shopping district in Bangkok, Thailand. In response to the context, the designers used layers of translucent fiberglass mesh to create a façade that blurs the boundaries between the inside and the outside, gravitating focus to the pavilion. This was also an attempt to reinterpret a material that was traditionally used within industrial context.

The design intent was to create spatial awareness of the blurred boundaries between the enclosed conference hall and the context by using free-hanging fiberglass mesh of different lengths, arranged from full high to shortest toward to inside that allowed visitors walk through and touchable. The wind’s constantly evolving movement allows visitors to interact with ambient changes. The meshes and lightings create special boundaries that can be both blurred and distinct thus changing the ambiance all the time. Day and night also become important parts of the installation as they animate the activities inside throughout.

The design of the pavilion stemmed from a desire to use an assembled lightweight structure that able to dismantle and assemble in a short time. The interior space is separated into 3 zones; maze exhibition space, Café, and the conference hall which able to contain 600 capacity for audiences. All space intended to create soft and malleable space habitable in various ways according to the required functions of each time.

Although intended for a short-term existence, instead materials will be a single consumed and wasted, the designers push the pavilion goes beyond its function and an exploration of the material life beyond the building. After the lifecycle of the pavilion, the 2-kilometer-long of fiberglass meshes proposes an alternative approach which involves a consideration of reused material and dismantled into over 1,000 tote bags after the event.
