Hwa Chong International School

Singapore | Completed

The existing building will be retained and developed within an extension, seamlessly blending the old with the new. The walls will be reconfigured to suit the new programme, but most of the structure is otherwise untouched. The grand stair is the zone of passage between old and new organising alumni and school functions as well as bridging to the new extension. Given the massive footprint required on the small site, the extension abuts the site boundary furthest from the roads outside the school for a welcoming entrance and central garden.

The new facade articulates the building structure. Composed of timbre screens, it provides visual connectivity to the landscape while minimizing heat exacerbated by the East-West facing. Its rhythmic components establish a new character and eliminate the need for decorative facade components.
